Hi, my name is SARS_1 and I’m addicted to Bass.
What’s your favorite part of the industry?
Exposing fans to the other side of bass music, and to also push the sound I’m supporting. It’s all about education when it comes to bass music.
What’s the biggest challenge to you when it comes to making it as a DJ/Producer?
Playing a different sound compared to the generic DJs. I play stuff that is being played in the U.K. In Calgary, most of these badmans are unknown to the general crowd.
Describe your first experience with electronic music?
U.K. Hard House back in 2004. TIDY TRAX went hard. I was in junior high.
What or who was the inspiration behind your career choice?
Squalid Squad had a major impact on me. I knew one of the members before the whole dubstep thing started and he showed me the good stuff. From then on, I started exploring other sounds and now I found a lot of bangers.
When did you get in the scene?
Krogh Sun used to put a monthly called Bigger Bass Bureau at Quincys and he offered me a set. Then I entered the Supreme Hustle Battle Royale and slayed the crowd. I’m a (DUB) selecta.
Who do you look up to?
EL-B, one of the founding fathers of dubstep before it was called dubstep. Meet him last summer before my first gig and he was an inspirational guy. Von D, a producer from France is also another one of my idols, his blends of using dubstep and jazz is amazing. D-E-Velopment a.k.a. Devilman is also another of my idols, guy is a grime MC and a producer. He also slayed Skepta in a clash. ‘Nuff said.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
DJing and still pushing the sounds for Dub Force One (U.K.) and Supreme Hustle.
What can people look most forward to when you spin?
I have a question of truth. Do you like bass? Because if you like bass then I’m gonna give you bass in your face and it doesn’t stop. I try to mix with no breaks. Why rest when you can skank all day?
How have you grown the most since you first started out?
I used to be a wasteman DJ. Now I’m a DUB selecta. DUB as in dubplate a.k.a. unreleased dubstep tunes, not released dubstep tunes on Beatport.
Who is the artist you would like to work with most and why?
Oi yoi! Big ups to my mates from Dub Force One, especially Bledbox the bossman, Audiak (my favourite producer), Akira, Dr. Bloodnugget a.k.a. Fletcha, D2 aka Dash Total’d, Doomtrooper, Hazy, Ard Drive crew, Jekyll a.k.a. anonymous, Latvian, Lington, Mr. Levi, Sinkro Dan, Soloman, Standard Procedure, Unnatural Forces and Squalid Squad. I’d like to work with them because I’m already supporting their tunes and they are badmans.
One word to describe my style would be… Bass.
Where can we see you spin?
Selected Supreme Hustle events or future dates that will be posted on my SoundCloud.
What’s your ‘guilty pleasure’ track?
Duncan Powell – Brake, UK Garage at its finest.
What’s your favourite gig thus far?
Silkie at Habitat, played a UK Garage set – it was good.
What advice would you give to any other up and coming DJs/producers?
Play the stuff you like and make sure it’s proper. If you come to a gig playing a shit set people will be sad.
How do you think you will stand out in the EDM scene?
I play stuff you can’t download or buy. Unless you are in the U.K., chances are I’m the only one with the tracks.
